[Also in Group XV] Apparatus for strapping a package comprises retaining means for initially pressing the ends of the strap together, means preventing lateral movement of the strap actuated by operation of the retaining means, a strap tensioning means, means for joining the ends of the strap actuated by a pair of levers, and further means for preventing lateral movement of the strap released by return of the joining means to its inoperative position. The retaining means comprises a tensioning wheel 9 mounted eccentrically on a shaft 15 over an anvil 9<SP>1</SP>, the wheel pressing the ends of the strap onto the anvil when a lever 11 is turned to the position shown. On actuation of the retaining means a cam 22, moving with the lever, turns a rod 24 so that an arm 26 on the rod is vertical and in contact with an edge of the strap. To tension the strap a lever 18 is oscillated, the lever rotating the wheel 9 by means of a pawl and wheel 19, 20. The joining means comprises levers 29, 30 having their pivotal ends formed as pinions which intermesh, and having their shafts mounting eccentrics 34, 35, which engage a slide 36 carrying a die 38 and a knife 37. Movement of the levers 29, 30 from the horizontal to the position shown causes the die to press the strap ends onto a die 39 join the ends of the strap by deformation, and causes the knife to sever the free end of the strap. The further means preventing lateral movement comprises a guide 45 formed on a rod 40 which is pressed into a lower operative position when the strap is first placed about the package. Return of the levers to their initial positions to raise the die 38 and knife causes a pawl 49 on the eccentric 35 to engage a projection 42 on the rod 40 to lift the guide. As the lever 30 reaches its horizontal position a projection 30<SP>1</SP> engages a peg 14 on the shaft of the wheel 9 to move the wheel and the rod 24 to their inoperative positions.
