[Class 146 (ii)] In apparatus for securing together the ends of metal straps wherein blanks for forming sealing-sleeves are obtained from a roll of sleeve material supported by the apparatus, the blank being bent around the ends of the strap to be secured by downwardly moving jaws mounted on a slide, a block 12 movably mounted in a casing 3, 4 is provided with oppositely disposed racks 14, 15 which engage with toothed members 16, 17 actuated by a pair of levers 24, 25, the block being connected to sealing-jaws 31, 34 by toggle mechanism, and the arrangement being such that the jaws first move downwardly, without moving apart, for bringing the sleeve blank into sealing position, whereupon the upper ends of the jaws move outwardly through openings 38, 39 in the casing 3, 4, whereby the lower ends of the jaws are moved inwardly so as to bend the ends of the sleeve blank under the ends of the strap. The toggle mechanism comprises two short levers 27, 28 pivoted on a shaft 26 on the block 12, the lever 27 carrying a pin 29 on which are pivoted the jaws 31, and the lever 28 carrying a similar pin on which are pivoted the jaws 34. Pins 35, 36 pass through the pairs of jaws and carry a cross-shaped punch member 37 located between the jaws, and a cutter 40 engaging the pins by means of elongated holes 41, 42. Rollers 45, 46 in the free ends of two levers 43, 44 mounted on fixed pivots 49, 50 engage the upper end of the cutter. A length of material 55 from which the blanks for the sleeves are cut is supplied from a roller on an upstanding plate 2, and passes in the direction of the arrow 53 over a guide plate 54, then past the cutter 40 and between the lower teeth in the jaws 31, 34 until the end abuts the opposite side wall of the recess in which the jaws operate. The material 55 passes between an adjustable eccentrically mounted roller 56 and a roller 57, the latter being freely mounted in a recess in the guide 54 and adapted also to project beneath the guide to co-operate with the strapping material. The strapping material 63, 64 passes over the base 1 and an extension plate 62. Movement of the upper band 64, in the direction of the arrow 65 causes the rotation of the roller 57 and the feed of the sealing-band 55 into the apparatus. The plate 62 has openings 67, 68 therein to accommodate the sealing-jaws during the sealing operation. In operation, the levers 24, 25 are moved upwardly to force the block 12, downwardly. The rack 15 engages the levers 43, 44 which force the cutter 40 to cut off the seal blank 55a from the material 55, the cutter co-operating with the edge of the guide plate 54 ; further downward movement of the block 12 does not lower the cutter immediately but forces the rack 15 between the levers 43, 44. The sealing-jaws 31, 34 carry the seal blank 55a downwardy and bend the sides thereof around the ends of the strapping 63, 64 supported on the central rib 70 of the plate 62, the punch 37 pressing the assembly against the rib 70. The punch is so shaped that it deflects downwardly the edges of the assembly. At this stage the tops of the sealing-jaws come opposite the openings 38, 39 whereupon the levers 27, 28 spread apart to cause the jaws to pivot about the pins 35, 36 to fold the edges of the seal 55a beneath the strapping and press the assembly against the punch 37. The jaws raise the edges of the assembly from the two sides of the punch whereby the notches a are cut in the edges. The block 12 continues to move downwardly, and the bottom of the rack 15 engages the upper edge of the cutter 40 to cause it to out the upper band 64 of the strapping, the lower band 63 not being cut since it is situated in a groove in the plate 62.
