This invention relates to seal presses and has for its object the provision of an improved arrangement of parts by reason of which the seal elements can be quickly and easily removed from the press and others substituted therefor. Improved means is provided also for locking the press in closed condition so as to make it compact and convenient to carry, the arrangement preferably being such that the spring-connected seal members when removed from operative position can be pressed together and fitted between the handle and the operating lever of the press so as to be held releasably in position by the pressure of the connecting spring.
t is a further object of this invention to improve presses of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out, the preferred means by which the several objects have been accomplished being illustrated in the drawing, in which Fig. l is a face view of the preferred form of the press;

Referring now to the several `figures of the drawing, in which corresponding parts are vindicated by the same reference characters, I5 indi cates a frame member in the form of a channel, comprising arms I6 and I'I connected by an intermediate web portion I8. As is clearly shown in Fig. l, each of the arms of the channel member I5 is provided with a deep notch I9 in one side portion so as to receive connected seal members 2b and 2i thereinto.
In the arrangement shown, the seal member 2l is provided with a stiff arm 22 rigidly connected therewith and extending laterally therefrom. For effecting a movement of the movable seal member 20 toward and from the stationary seal member 2|, I have provided an operating lever 26 formed of sheet metal bent into a channel for- 40 mation, such lever being pivotally mounted in position upon the arms I6 and yIl by means of a pivot pin 2l extending across the frame member I5 transversely thereof. Upon the lever 26 in eccentric position with respect to the pivot pin 45 2l, I have mounted a segmental roller 28 by means of a pivot pin 29, such roller 28 being cut away at its upper side portion so as to have clearance with respect to the pivot pin 2l of the operating lever 26. The arrangement is such that upon a stroke of the operating handle 26 in clockwisedirection in Fig. 1 the roller 28 is pressed downwardly on l the seal member 2|] for moving it into cooperative relation with the seal member 2 I, as is best shown in Fig. 4. ' 28 applies substantially a toggle pressure eiect upon the movable seal member 2G for pressing it downwardly with a minimum of effort on the part of the operator.
Means is provided in connection with the operating lever 2S for holding the lever in its closed position. This means comprises a plate 3D oilset slightly at an intermediate point so as to permit the platey to be slidably mounted to advantage upon the web of the channel-formed lever 26, with the plate extending through an opening 3l in said web portion as is best shown in Figs. 4 and 8. At its outer end, at the left in Fig. 1, the plate 30 is provided with a downwardly turned end portion 32 which is cut away partially to provide a transversely extending lug 33. This lug 33 is in such position with respect to the lever 26 that when the lever is in its lowered position as shown in Fig. 5 said lug 33 stands directly opposite the space between a lug 34 on the handle and a shoulder 35 on the frame arm I6. With the parts in the position as shown in Fig. 5, the plate 30 may be given a slidable movement toward the right in Fig. 5 to the position as shown in Fig. 4 in which the lug 33, by engagement with the lug 34 and the shoulder 35, serves to lock the handle 2S in its lowered position.
Upon the pivot pin 21'! (see Fig. 4), I have mounted a coiled spring 36 having one end portion in engagement with the lower face of the plate 3i] and its other end portion in engagement with the segmental roller 23. The spring is so arranged as to press downwardly upon the roller and upwardly upon the plate, serving normally to hold the roller 28 in operative position for engagement with the seal member 20 and to press the plate 36 into frictional engagement with the handle 26 for causing the plate to remain in any adjusted position to which it may be moved.
In the arrangement shown, the frame member l5 is extended toward the right in Fig. 1 some little distance beyond the ends of the notch l5) so as to provide a handle 3l positioned directly opposite the handle portion of the operating lever 26.
It is believed to be unnecessary to describe in detail the operation ofy my improved device.
When the device is to be used, the lever 26 and the handle 31 are pressed together so as to bring the seal members 26 and 2l into cooperative relation to each other. If it is desired to use the press with a plurality of sets of spring-connected seal members, the removal of one set of seal members and the substitution of another set can be very quickly and easily effected. When the press and seals are to be packed for storage or for transportation, a set of the connected seal members can be inserted between the arms of the channel frame member as shown in Fig. 8, the spring 23 serving to hold the seal members in frictional engagement with the frame arms I6 and Il so as to hold the seal unit releasably in position.
While I prefer to employ the form and arrangement of parts as shown in my drawing and as above described, it is to be understood that my invention is not restricted to the form shown except so far as the claim may be so limited, since changes might well be made in the form and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
In a-seal press, the combination of a frame member having a deep notch open at one side of the frame, two seal members, means movably connecting said seal members together and normally holding them yieldingly in slightly spaced relation to each other, means for holding said connected seal members releasably in said notch of the frame member, a lever pivotally mounted on a transversely extending pivot pin between two transversely spaced portions of the frame, a roller journaled on said lever in position to apply a toggle pressure effect on one of said seal members for forcing it into operative engagement with the other seal member upon an operag tive stroke of the lever, said roller being mounted in slightly eccentric position with respect to the pivot pin of the lever and being cut away at one side portion so as to clear said pivot pin, a locking plate slidably mounted on said lever, a shoulder on said frame member adapted by engagement with said locking plate to hold said lever releasably in position for maintaining said seal members in operative engagement with each other, and a spring bearing on said roller and on said locking plate serving to hold the roller normally in position for operative engagement with one of said seal members and to press said locking plate into frictional engagement with the lever for holding the locking plate normally in any adjusted position to which it is moved.
