The primary object of my invention is to provide animproved punch of this kind, by means of which sheet metal and other material of relatively heavy gage may be easily punched by hand pressure. i
I have further aimed to so construct the punch that the die and punch elements will be maintained in such relative relation as to insure sharp and accurate punching impressions, and to embody the die or punch supporting or operating parts in such operative relation and to so construct these parts that they will be strong and durable and yet may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
In furtherance of the foregoing objects my invention contemplates the provision of what might be termed a stationary and a movable handle, the former of which is slotted to provide a mouth for reception of material to be punched, and lower and upper heads, one carrying an anvil and the other having a bore for'the punch in alinement with the anvil side plates slotted to provide a mouth in registration With that in the stationary handle'and between and upon which plates the handles are respectively pivotally attached; and an intermediate punch-carrying member or lever pivoted on the stationary handle and connected with the movable handle so as to be operated thereby in transmission of the punching pressure, this construction permitting movement of the parts to an inoperative position in which said intermediate lever may be swung back, withdrawing the punch and permitting ready removal thereof.

My invention is particularly applicable to what might be termed small. hand punches adapted for punching holes up to one-fourth of an inch or more in diameter in sheet metal, channels, angles, and other stock up to approximately 14 gage. understood, however, that these dimensions are illustrative merely, but they convey an approximate idea of the comparatively heavy punching which may be done with a small hand tool embodying my invention.
And while I have shown in the present application my invention applied in a hand tool in which both of the principal levers are in the form of handles as herein disclosed, it will be observed that it may also be applied in such form that the so-called stationary handle or lever, which will be later more particularly described, may be rigid or fixed to a suitable support.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be observed that the stationary part of the punch at present in the form of a handle or a lever designated generally by 8, is slotted at one end providing a mouth 9 for the reception of material to be punched. This month divides said lever end into a lower and an upper head 11 and 12 respectively, in the former of which is mounted a die element at present in the form of a tubular anvil 13, and in the latter is drilled a hole 14 in axial alignment with the anvil, providing a guide bore for the movable die element or punch 15. It will be observed that the heads 11 and 12 are in rigid relative relation, and that the punch will be oper- It should be 3 atively guided and maintained in true axial alinement with the anvil.
The head end of said stationary handle is disposed between and pivotally connected to a pair of side plates 16 and 1'7. These plates are slotted, providing a mouth 18 in registration with the mouth 9 and are secured together and pivotally connected to said lever 8 by suitable means, such as a bolt 19, passing through the lower head 11 at a point in proximity to the anvil.
A handle lever 21 adapted to be moved for transmitting the punching pressure is likewise disposed between and pivotally mounted upon the side plates 16 and 17, butat the opposite side of the mouth 18 from the mounting of the stationary handle or lever 8. A bolt 22 serves to connect said handle lever 21 ano tie side plates, and it will be manifest that both the handle orlever elements 8 and 21 may fulcrum on the bolts 19 and 22 respectively, and that the side plates may likewise fulcrum as a unitary structure or frame relatively upon either of said bolts 19 or 22 and relatively to its respective handle lever. In the operation as will be described late r, both of these swinging or rocking movements occur. The punch will be carried by an intermediate member or lever designated generally by 23, which has a T slot 24: open at one end for the reception of the T-head 25 of the punch and is pivotally mounted at its opposite end on a pin 26 on the stationary handle 8 at the inner end of the headed portion thereof. By reason of this construction, the intermediate member 23 may be swung from the operative position shown in Figs. 1 and 6 in which the punch is operatively disposed in-the bore 14, to the inoperative position shown in Fig. 3, in which the punch may be removed from the slot 2%. Removal of the punch is desirable for the purpose of refinishing the face or the substitution of a new punch, or one of ditlerent size, according to the requirements.
A positive motiontransmitting connection is provided between the head 27 of the handle 21 and the free end of the punch-carrying lever 23, through which connection the punching pressure is transmitted. This connection is so designed as to produce but minimum friction, thereby eliminating wear and making for easy hand operation. I prefer that this connection shall be in the form of a projection integral with the lever 28 and circular in cross section, and a circular recess 29 in the head of the handle 21 which fittingly receives said projection. In the present instance, the bolt 33, will strike against and be stopped by the fixed end of the spring 31 which overlies the upper open end of the slot 34:.
The punch is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 1 with the hand lever 21 partly depressed and projecting the punch from the face of the upper head 12. In the normal, open position shown in full lines in Fig. '6, the. punch is retracted within said head, and the handle 21 is raised under the influence of the spring 31 until stopped by the bolt 33 as explained. In this open position, material of maximum thickness may be inserted between the punch and anvil. To perform the punching operation the handle 21 will be swung downwardly, thereby moving the. punch-carryinglever,
23 downwardly through the agency of the connection between said parts described above and transmitting the punchingpressure and movement to the punch. ltwill be observed in this operation that the punch. moves in true axial relation to theanvil and is positively guided in this movement by reason of the rigid head structure. Furthermore, there is no strain on the punchcarrying or moving parts such as might cause deflection or fracture thereof. The punch-actuatinglever 23, however, swings in a counterclockwise direction about the pivot 26. The hand lever 21 swings in a clockwise direction about its fulcrum 2 2. The distance between the lever fulcrums 19 and 22 is fixed, and inasmuch as the distance between the centers of the relatively fixed bolt 19 and the projection 28 will be diminished bythis' movement, the side plates 16 and 17 will swing upon and about said or frame structure to be swung in acounterclockwise directionfup on the bolt 19, {and permitting the handle 21 to be swung inthe same direction so that it will become detached from the projection 28. This leaves the intermediate lever 23 free to be sivu ng upwardly to a, raised position shown in Fig. 3, in which thepunch 15 is free to be withdrawn froin the T-slOt 24:. It will be manifest that I this construction affords quick and easy access to the puacnanatha the part-s may, be readily moved to an inoperative position, such as shown, without removal or disassociation of the operating parts. By reversal of the movements described and insertion of the bolt 33, the parts may obviously be associated in operative relation.
It is believed that the foregoing conveys a clear understanding of the objects prefaced above, and while I have illustrated but a single working embodiment, it should be understood that changes might be made in details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims:
I claim:
1. A punch comprising, in combination, a stationary handle having formed integrally therewith a lower die-carrying head and an upper punch-guiding head in rigid relative relation and separated at one end by a material-receiving mouth, a die in the die-carrying head, a punch guided in the punchguiding headto slide toward and from the die in axial alinement therewith at all times, side plates pivotally connected to the head structure, a movable handle lever interposed between and pivotally mounted on the side plates, and a punch-operating lever pivotally attached to the stationary handle and operatively engaged at its free end between the punch and said movable handle lever for transmitting punching pressure to the punch by downward movement of the handle lever without disturbing said alinement of the punch and die.
2. A punch comprising, in combination, a stationary part having formed integrally therewith a lower diecarrying head and an upper punch-guiding head in rigid relative relation and separated at one end by a material-receiving mouth, a die in the die-car rying head, a punch guided in the punchguiding head to slide toward and from the die in axial alinement therewith at all times, side plates pivotally connected to said stationary part, a handle lever interposed be tween and pivotally connected to said side plates, a punch-operating lever pivotally attached to said stationary part and opera tively engaged at its free end between the punch and said handle lever v for transmitting punching pressure to the punch by downward movement of the handle lever, a spring operative between the stationary part and punch-operating lever urging the latter in a direction to withdraw the punch, and means operative between the stationary part and one of the side plates for limiting the punch-withdrawing movement of the parts.
'3. A device of the character described comprising a stationary handle having a lower anvil-carrying head and an upper punch-guiding head separated by a material-receiving mouth, side plates having a material-receiving mouth and pivotally connected below said mouth to the lower head, a movable handle lever pivoted on and between said side plates above the upper head, a punch-carrying lever pivotally mounted on the stationary handle and adapted to be moved into and out of an operative position and permitting ready removal of the punch when in the inoperative position, a spring for urging the parts to an open position in which the punch is withdrawn from the anvil, and a pin and slot connection between the stationary handle and the side plates for limiting movement of the parts in said open position.

A punch comprising, in combination, a stationary part having formed integrally therewith a lower die-carryinghead and an upper punch-guiding head in rigid relative relation and separated at one end by a mate rial-receiving mouth, a die in the die-carrying head, a punch guided in the punch-guiding head to slide toward and from the die in axial alinement therewith at all times, side plates pivotally connected to said stationary part, a handle lever interposed between and pivotally connected to said side plates, a punchoperating lever pivotally attached to said stationary part and operatively engaged at its free end between the punch and saidhandle lever for transmitting punching pressure to the punch by downward movement of the handle lever, a spring operative between the stationary part and pu11cl1operating lever urging the latter in a direction to withdraw the punch, and means operative between the stationary part and one of the side plates for limiting the punch-withdrawmovement of the parts, said means including a removable element, said handle lever and punch-operating lever being movable to inoperative positions after removal of said element for permitting removal of the punch from the punch-guiding head.
5. A device of the character described comprising a stationary part having a lower and an upper head separated by a slot providing a mouth for the reception of material to be punched, an anvil on the lower head, a punch bore in the upper head in axial alinement with said anvil, a frame having a material-receiving mouth in registration with that on said stationary part and being pivotally connected directly to the lower head thereof, an operating lever pivotally connected to said frame above the upper head, a punch movable in said bore, an intermediate punoh-moving member mounted with capacity to move into and out of operative position and permitting ready removal of the punch when in the inoperative position, a connection between the operating lever and puncl1moving member for transmitting punching pressure to the latter, means for urging lower and an upper head separated by a slot providing a mouth for the reception of material to be punched, an anvil on the lower head, a punch bore in the upper head in axial alinem'ent with said anvil, a frame having a material-receiving month in registration with that on said stationary part and being pivotally connected directly to the lower head thereof, an operating lever piveta lly 'connected to said frame above the apper- Heart, a ptm'ch movable in said bore, an intermediate pun'ch moving member a ienated with capacity to move into and out sf 'opei'ative position and permitting ready removal of the punch when in the inoperative position, a connection between the operating lever and punch-moving member for transmitting punching pressure to the latter, means for urging said puneh-moving member in a direction to withdraw the punch and swing said operating lever and cooperating parts to an open position, a removable stop bolt on said trains, and a slot in said stationary member for passage of said bolt and adapt ed for limiting movement thereof and consequently of the punch-operating parts in the open position and removal of said bolt permitting movement of the parts tothe 1 above-mentioned inoperative position.
