UNITED STATES v1,552,554 PATENT, OFFICE.
HAROLD GOSS, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIG'NOR TO ELIE W. L ABOM- BABDE, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BLANK-OPERATED MECHANISM.
Application filed January 31, 1924. Serial No. 689,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-Lmonn J. Goss, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Blank-Operated Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my invention is to improve the operation of machines oper ating on blanks and especially on very thin blanks such as those used in making envelopes.
The principal feature of my invention consists in providing mechanism operated by the passage of a blank which mechamsm operates to affect the blank after such passage.
A particular feature is a trip mechanism operated b a passing'blank to release for action mec anism to bring a glue roll into subsequent cooperative engagement with said blank.
Another feature is particular cam mechanism for controlling said action. 25
Other features will be pointed out below. 7
In the drawing Figure 1 1s a plan of a portion of a blank.
feeding and gluing machine embodying my Figure 2 is an elevation of the same; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged elevation of the cam mechanism described below; and
Figure 4 is a plan of the cam.
I illustrate my invention as embodied in an envelope making machine in which A. A represent side bars of any suitable 'frame and connected with them are brackets A and A. Rock shaft B is journalled in these brackets and has fixed connection with trip member 6 near the center of the machine, said member 6 being preferably curved near its end for a purpose described below. Fixed to one end of said shaft is hook I) normally engaging beneath pin b fixed to arm D which is fixed to shaft D, the latter being journalled in said side bars. Fixed to shaft D is arm D carryin roller D and also arm 1) carrying roller Spring E may have one end suitably fixed to the frame of the machine and the other end is connected to arm D and tends normally to draw arm D downward and consequently raise rollers D and D. Arm D has a pror periphery of cam member F, the latter haV-' ing fixed connection with shaft F. which is suitably mounted on the frame. Fixed also to said shaft is pinion F? driven by pinion F through chain F pinion F bemg driven in any suitable way, as by pinion F 7 The blanks, such as G and G, are fed by cooperating upper belt H and lower belt H which may be actuated in, any suitable way. presser rolls H may be used if desired.
Glue roll K is suitably mounted directly above roller D and has on its periphery glue which may be received from'any suitable glue receptacle. ably mounted directly above roller D.
'In operation envelope blank G-is fed ,by
the\belts and H-- and its forward edge engages member I; which is inclined 'for- Upper presser rolls H and lower Glue roll K is suitward and curved slightly upward so that it will never permanently block the feed of the blank. Blank G then pushes member I engagement with pin 12 w ereupon spring E acts to pull down arm D and consequently raises rolls D and D to press the flaps such as g and 9 rolls K and K which thereupon deposit" glue on the top surfaces of said flaps}. Arm D may be lowered because just after the hook I) releases the pin 7) the roller D may move into the depressed portion f of the cam surface where it rides until the partially folded blank G has about reached the position occupied by partially folded blank G and then roller D rides up ontocam surface f which brings pin 6 up, into normal position so that as blank G passes beyond member 6 the latter, under the influence of gravity, will drop down and swing hook I) under pin b where the hook gemsgins until th next blank moves mem- It may be desired to vary the length of time during which the rolls D and D will be raised to accommodate, for example, blanks of different sizes and for this-purpose I provide an adjustable cage L which is loosely mounted on'ithe cam shaft, its outer edge being flush with the portion f of the periphery of the cam. The cage may be swung to expose the desired amount of depressed portion 7 and I provide a set firmly against the '6 without striking the latter.
of sockets f in theicam; the desired'two of which receive ins 7 which engage the ends of slot L to old the cage in the desired position.
When the portion f of cam F is in contact with the roll D, the arm D is held in a position such that the pin 6 is raised slightly from the hook I) to allow the strain of spring E to be removed from the hook I). This allows the hook I) to swing freely, as the friction between hook and pin 1) is removed. Therefore during the period of time in which the roll I) is in contact with portion f, the finger b and hook'b" are free to be actuated by the passage of a blank. The passage of a blank raises the finger b sufficiently to disengage the hook b from pin 6 thus allowing the roll D to drop. into the depression f on the cam after the portion f has passed by the roll due to rotation of the cam. During the entire contact of roll D with portion f, the sin b is held just a little above normal an consequently the hook may swing under pin by a moving blank; a hook having fixed connection with said member; means to act upon said blank after the latter has swung said member and including a pin to interlock with said hook. 3. A machine for applying glue to blank comprising a glue applying roll; a presser roll to cooperate with said glue roll; means to move said presser roll into such cooperative position; and means to hold the firstmentioned means against movement but actuated by a blank to release the firstmentioned means for movement.
4. Mechanism of the character described comprising a hook; a member mounted to be swung into position to act upon the blanks; an arm to swing the last-mentioned member, said arm having a pin to interlock with said hook and having a roller; a member having fixed connection'with saidhook and actuated by passing blanks to release said hook from said in; a cam to cooperate with said roller; and arm and thereby swing the first-mentioned member into acting position when the hook and pin are unlocked.
5. Mechanism of the character described comprising a movable hook; a pin; a cam having a periphery operative to move" said pin into position for engagement with said hook and having a portion projecting from said periphery operative to move said pin in a direction along the shank ofrsaid hook just prior tosaid engagement.
