[Also in Group XV] A device for tensioning and sealing a metal band by means of a sleeve 30 extracted from a magazine 25 comprises a casing 2 containing a sliding punch 13, having two jaws 17 pivoted thereon and vertically reciprocable by a control lever 9 which also operates two slides 3 which close the jaws to form the sleeve around the band. When the sleeve is positioned, an eccentric 8, also driven by the lever 9, engages a roller 15 on the punch 13 causing a pair of projections 20a of a notching knife 20 to lock the sleeve and bands together and cause a knife 21 to weaken one strand of the band so it may be severed from the supply coil. The band is positioned in the device below a tensioning roller on a shaft 54 which is lowered onto the band through an eccentric mounting and its operating lever 48. This lever also moves a sleeve into position, by means of linkage 47, 41, pawl 40 and lever 39 engaging a slide in the magazine 25. When the sleeve is in position the slide is released as the pawl 40 is raised above the lever 35 by a pin and slot device 80-82. The band is now tensioned by a pawl and ratchet 62, 56 from a lever 60, after which the control lever 9 is operated to form the seal. The band is held in place by a spring pawl 79, Fig. 9, which is released by a pin 74 on the return stroke of the lever 48. A control bolt prevents tensioning of the band until it is in correct position.
