[Class 45] [Also in Group XV] In a tool for securing together the ends of a strap passed round a package in which the inner lap of the strap is gripped with its free end projecting through a jointing mechanism for engagement at the far side of the latter with a holding device, means are provided for automatically releasing the gripping device when the holding device is brought into effective operation. The tool described is of the general construction described in Specification 578,854, [Group XV], and comprises a stationary die 3 and two vertically slidable dies 4, 5 operated from eccentrics 8, 9 on the shafts 10a, 11a of operating handles 10, 11, Fig. 6, which are geared together so that the die 4, which forms the holding device, is lowered before the die 5. The die 5 coacts with a blade 12 to sever the supply end of the strap which is tensioned by a rack gripper 13 operated by a handle 14 through ratchet means. The inner strap is held by a cam-shaped gripper 16 on a rock-shaft 17 carrying a lever 18 having two arms 19, 20, the arm 19 carrying a finger-piece by which the gripper is brought into operation and the arm 20 carrying an adjustable screw 21 adapted to be engaged by the curved part 22 of the handle 11 so that the gripper 16 is released as the handle is raised to operate the die. A projection 23 on the hub of the handle 11 having an adjustable screw 24 is provided to engage the hub of the handle 10 to limit the movement of the handles. A catch 26 as described in Specification 597,861 is provided, and the holding device, instead of being the die 4, may be of the form described in Specification 597,862.
