Abstract

461,484. Oil engines. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. June 19, 1936. No. 17101. Convention date, June 19, 1935. [Class 7 (iii)] At the end of the compression stroke of a Diesel engine the piston cuts off or throttles the communication between an air space or spaces, into which the larger part of the air is forced, and a combustion chamber outside the piston-swept space. As shown in Fig. 2, the combustion chamber c lies between air spaces e<1>, e<2> which contain the inlet and exhaust valves f<1>, f<2> and communicate with the cylinder through throttled openings g<1>, g<2> The openings g<1>, g<2> may be. shaped so as to guide the air jets issuing from the spaces e<1>, e<2> past the opening of the chamber c. Perforated vaporizing plates may be arranged within the chamber c or between it and the cylinder The lower surface of the combustion chamber may be bounded by the top of the cylinder block. In Fig. 4, a tapering combustion chamber c is arranged on the cylinder axis and the valves are arranged in an air space e arranged at the side of the cylinder. To produce a circular movement of the air in the cylinder the throttled opening g may enter the cylinder-space a tangentially. In other forms the chamber c extends transversely across the cylinder axis and either or both of the valves are arranged in an air space which may overlap the cylinder space. The air space and the combustion chamber may be separated at the point of throttling by a vertical wall.
