Abstract
460,264. Microphones. YOUNG, L., and YOUNG, A., (trading as VITAVOX ACOUSTICS). June 26, 1936, No. 17859. [Class 40 (iv)] An electrodynamic microphone has a chamber open to the rear of the vibratory diaphragm and containing a packing permeable to air and an aperture provides communication between this chamber and a further chamber which is preferably closed to the atmosphere. The packing material, constituted by superposed rings 20 of felt, is contained in a chamber formed by the centre polepiece 4 and a tubular non-magnetic ring 8 of a magnet system, as described in Specification 460,265, which communicates with the rear of the diaphragm 7 by means of a perforated ring 21 and the air gap 5. The second chamber 23, formed between the magnet system and the casing 13 of the microphone, is connected to the first chamber by one or more apertures 22 in the plate 2 of the magnet. In a modification of the packing arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown.), superposed rings of the air-permeable material are separated by rings of non-permeable material of unequal dimensions to produce a sinuous air path in the first chamber. The rear of the diaphragm may communicate with the first chamber by apertures in the plate 1 and the dimensions of the casing and chamber 23 may be selected to produce a desired low-frequency response.
