455,446. Discharge apparatus. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London, and BOYLAND, D. A., and DUKE, S. M., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. June 20, 1935, No. 17723. [Class 39 (i)] A large electric discharge device dissipating at least 10 kw. of power comprises a cylindrical or like closed grid electrode having an area considerably exceeding 10 cm.<2> and a shadow ratio not greater than 1 /100 and consisting of an open mesh built up of intersecting wires, all of the same diameter and rigidly affixed to each other at all their contacts by welding or the like. An increase of rigidity for a smaller shadow ratio is obtained. A grid is shown suitable for a triode adapted to dissipate 50 kw. and comprises 24 parallel wires 1 stretched between ring end supports 3, 31 and a helix 2 wound round them and welded at each contact. Both 1 and 2 are molybdenum wires 0À3 mms. in diameter. The grid is 400 mms. long and 80 mms. wide, and the pitch of the helix is about 10 mms., the mesh thus consisting of approximate squares giving a shadow ratio of 1/900.
