Abstract

415,570. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and PEARCE, A. G., c/o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. July 28, 1933, No. 21272. [Class 39 (i).] A tube is supported in an outer envelope which may be evacuated by a plurality of annular metal members, each member bearing on the body of the tube at a plurality of isolated places, the sum of the lengths of which measured circumferentially is much less than the tube circumference. In one form, Fig. 2, the tube 1 is supported in an outer tube 2 by means of nickel strips 3, each consisting of corrugated portions 4 and springy arcuate portions 5. Two such members, one near each end of the tube, may be mounted directly or through insulation on a rod 10 which serves as the lead in wire for the electrode remote from the pinch. A helical wire around the tube may serve as a starting device of known kind and may be connected to one of the members 3, or one of the members may itself serve as the starting device. In modifications, the supporting member may be an annular helical wire or a distorted zig-zag wire. In these constructions a longitudinal member is not necessary.
