656,894. Making grids for electron discharge tubes. SPERRY CORPORATION. March 10, 1948, No. 7364. Convention date, April 10, 1947. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] A grid structure for an electron discharge tube is made by impressing a series of indentations of graduated size on a long wire or strip, Fig. 1, and then winding this strip spirally upon itself from the end 85, so that smaller indentations nest within larger indentations to form the structure of Fig. 2 comprising a number of nested groups of V-shaped elements. The wound structure is then secured inside a retaining ring 110, which may alternatively be formed as an integral extension of the original strip of Fig. 1 and finally wrapped round the completed structure. The V-shaped elements may, alternatively, be U-shaped, elliptical, hyperbolic, &c. as in Fig. 3 (not shown). The use of strip combines the advantages of good heat dissipation, reduced interception of electrons, and mechanical strength.
