[Class 69 (i)] [See also Group XIX] Apparatus for measuring the consumption of petrol over a definite distance or time comprises two chambers 4, 5 separated by a membrane 3 or by a piston, the chamber 4 being connected by a pipe 7 and valve 8 to the petrol tank and by a pipe 6 to the carburetter, while the chamber 5 is connected to a manometer 12 and also, when a valve 14 is opened, to the atmosphere. A switch 23, which is opened periodically by a plunger 22 operated by a cam 21 driven either from a vehicle wheel or from a clock mechanism, controls the circuit for electromagnets 11, 16 actuating the valves 8, 14 in such a way that valve 8 is opened and valve 14 closed for a definite distance or time travelled, valve 8 being then closed and valve 14 opened. During this second phase the carburetter sucks out petrol from chamber 4 and the membrane 3 moves upwards, and during the first phase a volume of petrol enters the chamber 4 equal to the volume of petrol sucked out by the carburetter, and the membrane 3 moving downwards causes the manometer needle 12 to indicate on a suitably graduated dial the rate of consumption of petrol. Should the electromagnet 11 not be working, the membrane 3 is adapted to bear on a tail member 26 on the valve 8 so as to lift the valve. The valves 8, 14 may be actuated mechanically instead of electrically. The manometer may be provided with a second needle indicating the total amount of petrol consumed.
