Abstract

454,283. Printing-plates. WESCOTT, W. B., Springdale Avenue, Dover, Massachusetts, U.S.A. May 21, 1935, No. 14813. [Class 100 (ii)] [See also Group II] In the preparation of sheet aluminium or an alloy thereof with manganese, for use as planographic printing plates, the aluminium &c. is immersed in a hot solution of an alkali aluminate to free it from grease, and to provide it with minute pits 15, Fig. 2, which are coated, as at 16, with a microporous crystalline oxide having a trace of alkali whereby the plane is sensitized to fatty acids. Suitable treatment consists in immersing the aluminium in a bath containing 5 grams of commercial sodium aluminate per 100 c.c. of water at a temperature of about 195‹ F., the rate of treatment being one square foot of aluminium surface to every five gallons of the solution for a period of 1'5 minutes. The whole of the surface may be provided with an oxide coating, Fig. 3, by repeating the treatment in a solution containing only 75 grams of aluminate per 100 c.c. of water at the rate of one square foot of aluminium surface to 1 gallon of solution for a period of 3 minutes. The aluminium may also be completely coated in one treatment in a bath comprising 1À5 grams of aluminate per 100 c.c. of water, 1 square foot of the metal surface per 1 gallon of solution being immersed for ten minutes. Specification 430,111 is referred to.
