Abstract

The surface of aluminium or aluminium alloys is treated by first rubbing the surface, preferably with a rotating brush, with a material, e.g. a thick cream comprising a mixture of 10 parts of pumice powder, one part of calcium hydroxide and water, to produce a fine grained surface, then immersing in a bath consisting of a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium phosphate and finally in a bath consisting of nitric acid and alum. The first bath preferably contains 2 oz. sodium hydroxide and 1/2 oz. sodium phosphate per gallon of water, and the second bath 2 drams nitric acid and 1/2 oz. powdered potash alum in 36 oz. water, the temperature of the baths being about 90 DEG C. The prepared surface may be used for offset colour printing without the prior application of a white ink base and for all photolithographic processes, for decorative purposes, e.g. as a base for photographic printing, painting, stencilling, spraying or for stamping, embossing, engraving or enamelling.
