Abstract

452,284. Knitting. ARISTOC, Ltd., and WILLIAMS, H. E., North Street, Langley Mill, Nottinghamshire. Jan. 19, 1935, No. 1839. [Class 74 (ii)] The top of a knitted stocking leg is knitted of about the same slackness as the adjoining welt, and thereafter the stitches are progressively tightened until normal work is being made. A stitch varying and regulating device for the purpose is described as applied to a Cotton's machine. One or more cams 12 are mounted on a shaft 9, and arms 14 carrying rollers 13 co-operate therewith. Each arm is pivoted to an arm 15 keyed to a rocking shaft 7. A cam 17 mounted on a spindle 18, between forks 16, bears on a screw 19 threaded through the arm 14. The cam 17 is turned by a ratchet 20 on the spindle 18. A second ratchet 22 mounted loosely on a sleeve 23 has deeper teeth 34<a> at intervals. As these teeth come round a pawl 27 drops into engagement with the ratchet 20 and feeds it forward. The pawl 27 is carried by an arm moved forward by a spring plunger 29 mounted on a fixed part of the machine. In this way the position of the roller 13 relative to the shaft 9 and hence the position of the needle bar relatively to the sinkers is gradually and progressively varied. Provision is made for resetting both ratchets. Specifications 372,673 and 440,308 are referred to.
