Abstract
343,534. Ratchet clutches. BENTLEY, P. A. and GODDARD, J. H., (trading as BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO.), and DEANS, F. E., Komet Works, New Bridge Street, Leicester. Oct. 15, 1929, No. 31256. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to means for maintaining the fabric takeup of a circular knitting-machine inoperative while the needle cylinder or cam sleeve is oscillated. In one form, Fig. 1, a clutch is provided so that when a shaft 10 movable with the needle cylinder or cams is oscillated, a gear 14 of the fabric take-up is rendered inoperative. The clutch comprises a sleeve 16 with a helical groove 26, and a gear 22 having a screw mounted therein for engaging the groove 26; during continuous movement of the shaft 10, an abutment 17 on the sleeve engages a projecting portion 23 of the gear 22 to drive the gear ; upon oscillation of the shaft 10, the sleeve is raised so that the parts 17, 23 do not engage. To reduce shock the abutment 17 is preferably mounted upon a collar yieldingly mounted upon the sleeve 16. As an alternative to the groove 26 and screw 24, the shaft 10 may have a screwthreaded portion engaging a nut carried by the sleeve 16. In another form, Fig. 5, the endwise movement of a sleeve 66 releases fingers 80 carried by a gear 76 from engagement with the sleeve 66 and a collar 78 mounted upon the shaft 10; and allows the gear 76 and the gear 14 to remain inoperative. The movement of the sleeve may, alternatively, be used to maintain a spring, rotating with the shaft 10 in engagement with a gear meshing with the gear 14.
