[Class 74 (ii)] A machine for knitting lengths of fabric composed of triangular sections for producing an article such as a beret is provided with a secondary shaft B mounted parallel to the main shaft and driven therefrom so that it makes one revolution for the number of sections necessary to produce the article, one part of the revolution being at a slow speed while the sections are being knitted, and the other part being at a much greater speed while courses of a separation thread are being knitted. Cams F. G<1>, G<2>, H are provided on the shaft B for controlling the movement of the separation thread e, for holding the pawls g<1>, g<2> of the needle selectors out of the engagement with the racking bars G<3>, G<4> and for raising a latch H<2> to allow the pawl g<2> to come into operation at the commencement of knitting of the triangular sections. Two mutilated ratchet wheels D', D' are provided upon the shaft B, the toothed portion of one wheel coinciding with a plain portion of the other wheel, and one wheel having a number of teeth corresponding with the number of triangular sections the other wheel having as many teeth as there are separation courses knitted. The first wheel' D' is driven by a spring pawl c' at the end of a lever oscillated by a cam a on the main shaft A, and allowed to engage the wheel D<1> at the end of the knitting of each section. The second wheel D' is engaged by a pawl c' which is allowed to engage its wheel at each revolution of the main shaft, so that the shaft B is racked once per revolution of the main shaft during the knitting of the separation courses.
