451,417. Joint - making packing. VIGERS, B. E. A., Winnington Hall, Northwich, Cheshire, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Feb. 4, 1935, No. 3638. [Class 122 (iii)] [See also Group XXVIII] In a joint for parts of evacuated apparatus such as vacuum vessels and pipes, a packing member of dumb-bell or similar shape makes contact with the parts to be joined along two or more continuous lines, one or more spaces between the lines being filled with a liquid admitted through an opening in one of the joined parts. In the bolted pipe joint shown, the soft metal packing comprises two rings 5 joined by a perforated web 11, the joint faces of the rings being grooved. The outer ring is constructed to yield more easily than the inner, such as by making the crests between the grooves of the outer ring narrower, or the outer ring may be of rubber whilst the inner ring is of copper. Other constructions of sealing ring are described. An opening 7 is provided in the flange 3 for the sealing liquid, and another opening may be provided for escape of air or for circulation of the liquid. The flanges may be recessed at 12 to enlarge the liquid space.
