Joint-making packing.-Joint-making packing for steam, water, gas, or air pipes, valveboxes, &c. consists of a thin iron or other metal plate a, perforated by small holes b, and provided with two or more handles c for convenience in inserting the packing. The centreline A-B is traced on the handles to assist in centring the packing. The plate is covered with red lead or other cement before being inserted in the joint.
