447,448. Retractable undercarriages for aircraft. SOC. D'INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES, S.I.A.M., 1, Route des Alpes, Fribourg, Switzerland. May 1, 1935, No. 13011. Convention date, Feb. 4. [Class 4] Two forms of aeroplane undercarriage are described of the kind in which, during retraction, a wheel describes two rotational movements about two distinct axes the two movements being combined and proceeding simultaneously, the resultant movement being determined by the presence of a member of constant length connecting a fixed point on the aeroplane with a fixed point on the wheelcarrying leg. In one form, Figs. 2 and 3, a wheel R is carried by a shock absorbing leg J pivotally attached at its upper end about a transverse axis to a rotatable member b-b rotatable about a fore-and-aft axis. The directing element comprises a bar K balljointed at a fixed point c at one end and at a point g on leg J at the other end. Retraction and extension may be effected by a single double-acting jack or as shown a single acting jack T may be employed for raising and a single acting jack V for lowering the undercarriage. In another form, Fig. 6, leg J does not constitute the shock absorbing element, but forms part of a pivotal triangular wheel support including a shock absorber A.
