Abstract
447,292. Pencil holders. TANT, W. H., 105, Dollman Street, Vauxhall, Birmingham. Dec. 7, 1934, No. 35137. [Class 146 (iii)] A screw - propelling pencil provided with means for preventing damage due to overwinding comprises an outer casing 3, having a coil or sleeve 4 fixed therein and provided with an open-ended spiral slot 5, and a lead carrier 11 slidable within a slotted guide tube 8, which is rotatable relatively to the casing 1, and containing a lead ejector bar 12 provided with an arm 12a passing through the slot 10 in the guide tube 8 into the spiral slot 5, the arm 12<a> being adapted to pass out through the open rear end of the slot 5 when fully retracted against the pressure of a spiral spring 6, which surrounds the rear end of the guide tube and bears at its rear end upon an internal abutment 3<a> carried by the casing, while its front end cooperates with the end of the sleeve 4. The spring 6 is depressed by the ejector bar when it leaves the slot 5 but causes it to re-engage the slot when the rotation of the parts is reversed. The casing 3 fits in the usual body portion 1 and a washer 7 is interposed between the spring 6 and the end of the sleeve 4. The lead carrier 11 is formed with a part 11<a> of greater width which houses a spring 14 which is compressed when the arm 12a leaves the upper end of the slot 5. Towards the end of the movement of the lead ejector bar in the forward direction, the lead carrier 11 abuts against the end of the guide tube 8, and the continued movement of the ejector bar ejects the end of the exhausted lead. The spring 14 causes re-engagement of the ejector bar and the slot 5 when the direction of rotation is reversed..The casing 3 may be provided with a pair of spiral slots either of which may be engaged by the ejector bar.
