Class 146(3) In a ball-point pen, the ball-housing is connected to a reservoir of plastic material by means of a thin-walled metal tube. As shown in Fig. 1, the transparent plastic reservoir tube 3 and an extension 4 of the ball housing 1 are joined together by an outer metal sleeve 5, and the unit is inserted in an outer casing 6. The inner end of the sleeve 5 may be of smaller diameter than the tube 3 and constrict the latter slightly. In the retractable pen shown in Fig. 3, wherein the housing 10 for the ball and the plastic reservoir tube 11 are joined together by a metal sleeve 12, the latter is extended to provide a skirt 14 which serves to form an abutment for a coil spring 8 which acts to retract the writing unit within an outer casing 9. The spring is a tight fit on the portion 15 of the sleeve 12 so that the spring is retained on the sleeve when the writing unit is withdrawn from the casing 9. In a modification of Fig. 3, the outer casing for the, writing unit comprises two end portions which are opaque, and an intermediate transparent portion having an inner bore which fits closely to the reservoir tube to support the latter against bending. In a further form, the retractable pen has the return spring arranged at the rear end of the reservoir tube, and the one-piece outer casing has an inner bore of substantially the same diameter as the reservoir to support the latter against bending.
