[Class 146 (iii).] In propelling-pencil actions provided with means for preventing overwinding both inwardly and outwardly of the character described in British Specifications 171,154, [Class 146 (iii)], 345,712, and 368,660, and U.S.A. Specification 1,845,293, a slotted lead-carrier structure is combined with a single pusher rod which is provided with a fixed and a movable lateral projection and a single helical spring mounted on the rod, the two projections moving in a longitudinal slot and cooperating with a guide sleeve and the usual spiral to advance or retract the lead-carrier structure. The lead is carried in a slotted tube structure b, shown in Fig. 1 as formed of two tubes, and the pusher rod c works therein. The fixed and movable projection c<1>, c<2>, respectively, on the pusher rod are normally held apart by a spring d, in contact with opposite ends of the slot b<1> in the tube b. Both projections extend through the slot b<1> and a slot a<2>, Fig. 5, in a guide sleeve a into engagement with the spiral f on the tube e fixed in the barrel g. The action is attached to the iotatable head i, and in operation upon appropriately rotating the latter relatively to the barrel g, the projections c<1>, c<2> operate to advance the lead-carrier tube b until the latter engages the end of the guide sleeve a, when further rotation causes the projection c only to advance, compressing the spring d and moving the pusher rod to eject the lead, until the projection c<1> also leaves the spiral f. Upon rotating the barrel reversely, the projection c<1> engages the spiral and is followed in due course by the projection c<2> ; at the inward limit of travel, the projection c<1> leaves the spiral and the end b<2> of the tube b abuts against the stop a<1> in the end of the guide sleeve a, so that upon further rotation, the spring d is only compressed until the projection c<2> also leaves the spiral f.
