Abstract
446,718. Motor-vehicle steering-gear. WILDE, W. H., 15, Waldemar Avenue, West Ealing, London. July 23, 1935, No. 20906. [Class 79 (v)] The steering-gear is provided with a changespeed gear comprising two coaxial shafts g, k and an axially-displaceable layshaft d geared to the other shafts and affording at least two different transmission ratios, means being provided for locking the layshaft in each of its operative positions. The layshaft is slid by means of a pedal or hand lever e provided with a ratchet locking device. The steering hand wheel h is fixed to the shaft g and the coaxial shaft k is connected to the usual drag link or other means for steering the road wheels. A spring w tends to keep one particular gear train in mesh. The gears are housed in a casing c secured to upper and lower parts a, b of the steering column and fixed to a bracket t. Alternatively, the usual steering column may have an opening formed in one side, the layshaft being mounted adjacent this opening. More than two gear ratios may be provided.
