Abstract

444,907. Vehicle opening - roofs. BISHOP, W. H., 48, Moor Street, Birmingham. Oct. 3, 1934, No. 28263. [Class 108 (i)] In a vehicle a roof opening, which may extend from the front to the level of the waist rail, is adapted to be closed by a number of rigid panels which are flexibly interconnected and certain of which are slidably mounted in guides which extend along the sides and terminate or are interrupted adjacent the rear end to permit the panels to pass out of the guides and fold downwardly upon each other. The closure comprises a rigid rear panel g hinged to the body at waist rail height, a second rigid panel h hinged to the rear panel g and a limited number of panels or frames k hinged to each other and to the panel h by strips l of webbing which also serve as guide strips engaging the side guides. The latter comprise a rail b, Fig. 5, having a filler block d a strip e and a water check c. The upper guide e terminates at f, Fig. 4, so that on opening or folding the roof closure the rear panel g is swung down horizontally and the panels k in their journey rearwards, leave the guides and fold on one another and on to the rear panel g, the panel h then folding on to the panels k after which the whole of the panels may be enclosed by a cover. The outer and inner covers m, n are secured to the panels h, k. In order to reduce the overhang of the folded panels the rear panel g may be provided with metal strips s which are connected to a body bracket u by links u, t of unequal lengths and to levers w carried by a slotted lug x as shown, a spring y being provided. To provide ventilation the front panel may be retracted from the wind screen somewhat, while the second panel is locked in position.
