Abstract

440,823. Fountain pens. KENT, A. F. S., Holm Ray, Iron Acton, near Bristol. June 26, 1934, No. 21828. [Class 146 (iii)] The writing-member A of a self-filling stylographic fountain pen, made up of a number of wires or the like arranged side by side, is arranged for longitudinal movement in one or more cores of wire D, and is also associated with a feed-bar B and a point-section C connected with the reservoir. The member A carries a valve E and a pressure plate F adapted, under the influence of a spring G, to seat on the end of the feed-bar B or a portion of the point-section C so as to interrupt the flow of ink when the pen is not in use, pressure on the point during writing causing'the valve to be lifted. The rear end of the spring may rest against a part of the section C or a plug H secured therein, or on a second valve P which acts to close the passage from the reservoir in case too great a pressure is applied to the point. The action of the spring can be controlled to suit the needs of different writers by adjusting the position of the feed-bar relative to the point section. The cores D may be arranged concentrically, in which case one or more of the coils may be secured to the point A and arranged to move with it while the other or others remain fixed. The flow of ink to the point may be facilitated by the introduction into the channel through the feedbar of fibrous or porous material so as to provide a number of capillary channels serving to draw ink from the reservoir. The movement of the member A during writing prevents choking of the channel and acts to clear away any solidified ink. The passage through the plug H may be continued by a coiled wire and a tube extending into the self-filling sac to facilitate filling. The exposed end of the writing-member may be partly enclosed by a shield in order to reduce evaporation, and an aperture may be formed in the feed-bar to equalize pressure inside and outside the reservoir.
