Abstract

Dark coloration of latices is prevented or removed, and their stability is increased by treatment with alkaline stabilizers, and small amounts of zinc compounds such as zinc oxide, alkali zincates, zinc ammonium compounds, or salts such as the carbonate, chloride, or acetate. The quantity of zinc oxide added is 0,01-2 per cent of the rubber, or equivalent amounts of other compounds. Concentration of the latex may take place before or after the additions. According to an example, 2,5 kg. of zinc oxide are made into a paste and added to 18,2 kg. of potassium hydroxide in its own weight of water. This is added to 5000 kg. of latex of 38 per cent solid content, to which has been added 30 kg. of potash-coconut oil soap. This is concentrated to 75 per cent solids as described in Specifications 382,235 and 393,732 to yield a pale coloured concentrate. The treatment also retards putrefaction.
