Abstract

Alkali cellulose for making viscose is prepared by steeping cellulose in aqueous caustic soda solution containing 17-25 per cent by weight of caustic soda in the presence of not more than 0.5 per cent by weight, based on the weight of the caustic soda solution, of a compound which is soluble in the caustic soda and which consists of silver hydroxide, an aromatic primary or secondary amine with at least one sulphonic acid group, or a quinone. The silver hydroxide is preferably formed in situ by the addition of a silver salt to the steeping solution. Suitable organic compounds which may be used are diphenylamine sulphonic acid and 1 : 4-naphthoquinone. At least 500 p.p.m. by weight of silver should be present. The compound may be added either to the caustic soda steeping solution or to the cellulose. After steeping, the alkali cellulose is converted into viscose in the normal way, being particularly suitable for the production of high-viscosity viscoses of 3-4 per cent cellulose. In an example two separate batches of 50 parts by weight of wood pulp were stirred with (a) 550 parts of 21 per cent caustic soda free from added silver nitrate and (b) the same amount of caustic soda to which silver nitrate had been added to give 500 p.p.m.Ag. The fluidity of the cellulose was determined at intervals over 4 days, and showed substantially no change in the case of that with the added silver. Specifications 13055/14, 14675/14, 135,205 and 240,717, [all in Class 2 (ii)], are referred to.
