[Class 146 (iii)] A penholder is provided with a spring- actuated shackle ink guard of shield form maintained by the spring in a forward position near the nib-end of the penholder, and thus serving to determine a constant position of the fingers of the user. The guard 4 is pivoted to a spindle 5 which slides in slots 3 in the penholder 1 so that it can be pushed back, when the pen is dipped, against the action of a tension spring 7, or of a compression spring placed behind the spindle, the spring being housed in the recess 2 which is somewhat deeper than usual. The ends of the spindle may be screw-threaded, so that the guard may be readily removed after unscrewing nuts on the spindle ; the spring has an attached perforated plate fitting on the spindle. The guard prevents the writer from gripping the pen too near the nib, and by its pivoted mounting adjusts itself to inclined positions to accommodate the fingers. The portion of the penholder behind the guard is smooth and rigid. In an alternative form, adaptable for very thin penholders, the guard is pivoted to a sleeve to which is secured a spring housed within a second sleeve fixed to the penholder ; or an ornamental guard is fixed to the first sleeve instead of being pivoted, for use with a decorative penholder.
