Abstract
<PICT:0425664/III/1> The flow of the oxide fumes leaving the combustion chambers of zinc oxide furnaces is retarded before they pass to the precipitating chambers, whereby the heat content of the fumes, whose cooling is thus retarded, effects a thermal treatment of the zinc oxide for improving its quality. As shown in the Figure, zinc volatilized in retorts 1 and burnt in the chamber B together with gas introduced from pipes 2 and 4 by means of air supplied at 5 passes to a chamber C the outlet of which is throttled by damper 11 before being collected in the precipitating chambers D. The chamber C is wholly or partially heat-insulated to maintain the fumes at a temperature of 500--800 DEG C. In an example where the burning zinc vapour has a temperature of 1200 DEG C., the temperature within the chamber C is kept at 700 DEG C.
