Abstract

<PICT:0435005/III/1> Zinc oxide of a acicular form is obtained by vaporizing zinc in a reducing atmosphere at approximately 1200 DEG C., and passing the zinc vapours into an oxidizing zone wherein the air supply is regulated to promote the growth of the oxide particles, as by slowly mixing the vapours with air to burn them with a lazy flame whilst maintaining a temperature of substantially 1100 DEG C. Zinc ore may be reduced and zinc be volatilized in a reducing atmosphere in a furnace 1, the mixed zinc vapour and reducing gas be passed to a chamber 6 maintained at a constant temperature in which they are momentarily arrested, and combustion be effected in a chamber 10 by means of air admitted through ports 15, 16. The zinc oxide particles at approximately 1100 DEG C. are withdrawn through a trail 11 to a bag room 13 by a fan 12. Air may be admitted through ports 17 into chamber 6 in sufficient quantity to oxidize impurities without oxidizing the zinc vapours to any appreciable extent. Specification 379,855 is referred to.
