Abstract
420,155. Balancing moving parts of reciprocating engines. BRAMBLE, W. H., and RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd., Sheaf Iron Works, Waterside South, Lincoln. May 19, 1933, No. 14500. [Class 122 (iii)] In balancing reciprocating engines, particularly horizontal, single-acting engines of road rollers and horizontal, internal-combustion engines with double, parallel cylinders and crank-pins in line, additional balancing masses, rotating in opposite directions at crank-shaft speed with or about shafts separate from the main shaft, are provided to eliminate vertical vibrations. A number of smaller masses may be substituted for each individual mass. In the construction shown, power is transmitted to the rear rollers through change speed and reversing - gearing in a box e below the frame f. The shafts i, j are disposed symmetrically about a vertical plane through the crank-shaft. A chain m drives the shaft o at crank-shaft speed. The shafts i, j, geared by wheels k, l, carry weights q, r. Instead of the balance weights rotating in the longitudinal axis of the engine, one or both may be replaced by a pair of weights on either side of the axis. In a modification, wherein the engine drive is transmitted through a chain and toothed gearing not disposed below the crank-shaft, a bracket is disposed beneath the main frame and carries geared, oppositely - rotating, balance - weight shafts driven by a sprocket wheel from the driving-chain. In the above construction, bobweight shafts may be disposed symmetrically about an axis through the crank-shaft. Weights may be arranged on the shaft of the jockey pulley p engaging the chain. The additional masses may be mounted on two or more of the gears of the power transmission gearing. Or metal may be added to, or removed from, the wheels to form the rotating masses.
