Jan. 9, 1933, No. 712. [Class 37.] In a variable inductance, a body of magnetic material C is arranged outside the coil B, and the inductance is varied by relative rotation between the coil and a magnetic core A which moves into or out of or through the coil. In one construction, Figs. 1 and 2, the body C completely surrounds the coil and is made in two cylindrical halves, to one of which the coil is secured. A number of inductances may be mounted on a common spindle E to form a gauged inductance unit for wireless receiving sets, initial adjustments of, the individual inductances being made by rotating the portions of the casing C carrying the coils relatively to the spindle. In a modification, the body C encloses the coil only, and not the core A. Both the body C and core A may be made of compressed and insulated magnetic powder. The core A may be tapered, Fig. 5, to give any desired relationship between the value of the inductance and the angular position of the spindle, or the same result may be obtained by shaping the body C so as to vary the air gap in different positions of the core A.
