Abstract

524,361. Directive wireless systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and COCKERELL, C. S. Jan. 28, 1939, No. 2989. [Class 40 (v)] The search coil or each of the field coils of a radiogoniometer is so constructed that the turns are of substantially the same size and shape, each turn having an axis of symmetry which is common to all the others. Fig. 1 shows one form of search coil in which the former is represented by two discs 1, 2, the axis of revolution being shown at 3, 4. The wire W forming the coil is wound from one end E1 in the direction of the arrows to the other end E2, two turns only being shown. The turns have an axis of symmetry QQ. In a modification, Fig. 3, the common axis of symmetry of the turns coincides with the pivotal axis 3, 4. The field coils for use with such search coils are of ordinary construction. Alternatively, the search coil may be of ordinary construction and the field coils wound as shown in Fig. 1 or 3. Harmonic errors due to variation in flux linkage of the rotor with the stator field upon rotation of the rotor are reduced by " distributing " each of the turns of the coil or coils so that the turns cross one another at several places.
