Abstract
408,316. Locomotives. ALLEY, S. E., 20, Iddesleigh House, Caxton Street, Westminster. Oct. 6, 1932, No. 27807. [Class 79 (i).] A steam railway locomotive has a main frame 10 supported at each end on a bogie 18, each bogie being driven by one or more steam engines 20 and each engine being slung at one end from the axle it drives and at the other end from the bogie. In the construction shown each bogie axle is driven by a separate engine 20 and the end of each engine remote from its axle is supported by links 23 pivoted to brackets 24 on the bogie frame 18. The engines may be of the two-cylinder compound type with automatic gear for providing equal starting torque from each cylinder. The axles 21 may be driven directly by the engines or through gearing enclosed in casings 25, the gear ratio being chosen according to the type of work required. The bogies are connected to the main frame 10 by vertical pivots 26 and transverse horizontal pivots 28. The main frame 10 carries the boiler, cab 11, bunker 12 and reserve water tank 17. An automatic stoker may be provided. The boiler is preferably of the water-tube type described in Specification 328,342, [Class 123 (ii)], and comprises drums 13, 14, 15 and tubes 30, 31. The bogie axles may be permitted a slight axial movement controlled by springs or rubber buffers. The front of the locomotive is stream-lined as shown. In a modification, one bogie axle is driven by one or two engines, the two bogie axles being coupled by side rods. Each bogie may have three axles, one or more being directly driven by an engine.
