Abstract
222,955. Alley, S. E., and Slade, L. E. July 11, 1923. Railway motor-cars; motor-cars, wagons, and the like. - Relates to self-propelled vehicles or locomotives in which a boiler or motor or a transverse driving or transmission shaft is mounted on a part of the frame which overhangs the front or the rear wheels. In the locomotive shown in Fig. 1, the boiler 11 is mounted upon the overhanging front end so that its ash pan 18 and bottom fittings are exposed and freely accessible beyond the front axle 19. The axles 19, 21 are driven from a transverse counter-shaft. 20 lying between the axles, the countershaft being driven from a transverse transmission shaft such as a combined crankshaft and differential gear arranged behind the rear axle 21. The crankshaft and the engine cylinders 17 are arranged above the framing. A hunker 14 and water tank 15 are provided. In a modification, the crankshaft is arranged between the two axles. The steam engine and boiler may be replaced by any other form of motor. One of the axles may be driven by a chain from one end of the countershaft and the ober from the other end. Only one of the axles may be driven.
