Abstract

216,784. Buchli, J. June 26, 1923, [Convention date]. Railway locomotives, steam and internal-combustion engine, have the cylinders b of the latter disposed with their axes at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the locomotive and their crank-shafts c parallel, these shafts being geared to an axle g coupled by rods h to the wheels i driven by the steam cylinders. The cylinders b may be placed beneath, in line with, or at the sides of the boiler a, or the boiler may be formed in two parts, one on each side of a single row of cylinders. In a further modification the cylinders may be placed on one side of the vehicle and the boiler on the other side. The cylinders are of such a height as not to interfere with the view of the driver, and they may have cooling jackets connected at their upper and lower parts with the steam and water spaces of the boiler. The shafts c are coupled to the axle g by gears d, d', f, f<1> which may have suitable clutches, means being provided to indicate when the wheels synchronize.
