Abstract

248,835. Alley, S. E. Dec. 10, 1924. Railway locomotives, steam; tractors, steam. -Comprises a steam locomotive, railway motor car, or motor vehicle having in combination two or more independent vertical (or substantially vertical) engines 16, 23 each of which drives its own. axle 13 or 14. The engine crank-shafts 17, 25 are arranged so as to be in substantially the same horizontal plane as the axles. The boiler 15 is so mounted on the frame that there is a clear space below it. Other axles may be coupled to those directly driven by the engines. When there are more than two axles the vehicle may be articulated. Two boilers may be provided on one vehicle and they may be combined in any way with the two engines on the vehicle. Each end of a crank-shaft may be connected to the corresponding end of an axle, and in that case an equalizing or differeiatial device may be employed as described in Specifications 213,988 and 213.993, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing. Variable-speed &c.]. Specification 239,932 also is referred to.
