Abstract
274,566. Leeds Forge Co., Ltd., and Alley, S. E. April 23, 1926. Railway locomotives, steam.-Comprises a steampropelled locomotive or vehicle having two or more axles, a boiler 14 located towards one end of the chassis and balancing means such as tank 16 towards the other end, a steam engine 13 located between the boiler and the axle 12 at the other end of the vehicle, and a transmission shaft 25 which extends to the axle 12 from that end of the engine unit which is remote from the said axle. Change speed gearing 20 - - 24 may be provided between the engine shaft 17 and the shaft 25, as shown in Fig. 2, the final shaft 19 of the gear extending beyond the gear-box 18 to a flexible coupling 26 driving the shaft 25 which passes freely through the hollow shaft 19. The vehicle may be weighted at the end remote from the boiler by the front end of a following coach or by other means. The axles may be connected by coupling-rods or two engines may be provided each driving a separate axle, the transmission shafts being arranged as described as above.
