Abstract

289,505. Alley, S. E. Jan. 21, 1927. Addition to 239,932. Railway locomotives, steam. - The steampropelled locomotive described in the parent Specification is provided with changespeed gearing and the engine may be supported universally at two points spaced apart in the axis of the crankshaft. As described in the parent Specification an engine 15 with vertical or other than horizontal cylinders is situated between the vehicle axles and drives the wheels 11, 12 through chains 18, 19, the chassis frame 10 carrying an overhanging boiler 13 at one end and at the other end either a balancing fuel or water container 14 or the end of a following coach. The change-speed gear may be epicyclic but in the construction shown slidable gear wheels 56, 57 on the crankshaft 20 are made to mesh, one at a time, with gear wheels 52, 53 fixed on a countershaft 21 carrying chain sprockets 54, 55 by which the vehicle axles are driven. The change-speed gear is enclosed in two separate three-part casings 30 which are fixed to transverse frame members 17 and support the engine and countershaft in spherical bearings 25, 26, 38, 48.
