Locomotives of compound or articulated construction comprise a boiler unit B carrying fuel or water tanks or both, which is itself carried at two pivot centres D on a power-driven group of wheels E and a power-driven unit F having a water tank G. The group E and the unit F may, as shown, have additional power-driven groups of wheels or units E<1>, F<1>. which are flexibly connected to the main groups at J, J<1> and are arranged to carry part of the load. The wheels may be driven by reciprocating engines or turbines, and transmission may be effected by electric or hydraulic means. Each group of wheels may have its own driving mechanism or power may be transmitted from one group to any others by means of rods, gearing or the like. Condensers may be provided instead of or in addition to water tanks, and either condensers or tanks or both may be carried on separate tenders.
