Gearing with provision for permitting flexure or distortion; transmission gear of invariable ratio.-Driving gear for electric locomotives of the kind comprising a double speed-reduction gear and a universal coupling in the gearing, has two motors or pairs of motors arranged opposite to each other with respect to the longitudinal plane of the locomotive and the coupling arranged in a sleeve surrounding the driving axle. One or more pairs of laterally arranged electric motors 1 have pinions 2 engaging spur-wheels 3 on a countershaft 4 which carries a pinion 9 driving a spur-wheel 6 on the driving axle 7. The spurwheel 6 has a resiliently mounted rim and drives the axle 7 through a universal coupling 8 mounted inside the sleeve 6<1>. When the pinions 2 have helical teeth, they are coupled together by a rigid coupling to take up the thrust
