Abstract
192,002. Aktiebolaget Ljungstr÷ms A ngturbin. Feb. 23, 1922, [Convention date]. Motive power, applications of. - A turbinedriven locomotive is provided with at least three trains of spur reducing- gearing between the turbine shaft and the track wheels. The gearing is preferably symmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the locomotive, each end of the turbineshaft 5 driving reducing- trains 7, 10 and 11, 12, the last shaft 2 of the gearing being driven through a third train 14, 15. The shaft 2 drives the track wheels through cranks and coupling rods. The first two gear trains are carried in casings 17 rocking to a limited extent on pivots 16 about the intermediate shaft 13, the turbine shaft being connected to the pinion shafts 6 through flexible diaphragms 8 and short shafts within the pinion shafts to allow of this movement. Reversing gearing is provided, comprising an eccentricallymounted gear-wheel 20 which can be brought into engagement with the pinions 14 and the gearwheels 15, the shaft 2 being carried in a casing 21 by arms 19 pivoted at 18 so that the gearwheels 15 can be disengaged from the pinions 14. In a modification, the reversing gear is situated in the second reducing train Fig. 5 shows an application of the invention to a locomotive. Four turbines 56 drive shafts 58, 59, 60 and 61 which are coupled to the track wheels. Specification 149,693, [Class 80 (i), Gearing, Belt &c.], is referred to.
