398,876. Diesel-electric locomotives. SULZER FR’RES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. March 23, 1932, No. 8609. Convention date, Feb. 27. [Class 79 (iii).] An articulated Diesel-electric type locomotive comprises three separate frames, a centre frame 15 carrying one or more electric motors 4 driving wheels 21 on which the frame is supported and outer frames 16 each carrying a generating plant comprising an internal combustion engine 1 and electric generator 2 and supported at its inner end through an articulated joint 18, 19 upon the centre frame. In the arrangement shown the wheels 21 are connected to the motors by toothed gearing 5, 6 whilst the outer ends of the frames 16 are supported on running bogies 17. In modifications, a pair of central motors are geared to a countershaft from which the drive is transmitted to the wheels through cranks and coupling rods whilst the end bogies 17 may be replaced by bogies carrying motors similarly geared to driving wheels. In such cases half the number of motors may be supplied from one generator unit and the remainder from the other unit, or all the motors may be supplied from either unit as desired.
