[Class 60.] Apparatus for stropping and honing safety razor blades consists of a casing a, the longitudinal walls of which are formed with guides 8, and on the bottom of which are cams 1 and brackets 3 provided with bearings 5 for the journals 6 of a plate 7 having on opposite faces respectively a stropping-surface and a honing- surface ; the bearings 5 may be formed in slides adjustable vertically in the brackets 3. A carriage 10 is guided along the casing by rails 9 thereon engaging the guides 8, and removably mounted in parts 24 on the carriage is a blade carrier 12, adapted to be secured to the carriage by bolts 18 pressed by springs 19. Pivoted to the carrier at 16 is a blade-holder 15 comprising two metal strips hinged together and clamped on to a blade 23 by clamps 22, the blade edge being either parallel to, or inclined to the axis of the pivots 16. The carriage 10 has thereon springs 21 which, when the bladeholder is swung so that the blade is in contact with the strop, press upon the holder. In operation, the carriage is moved to and fro along the casing, the cams 1 causing the blade to swing at the ends of the strokes to present the other side to the strop, and also lifting the blade from the strop as it reaches the ends thereof. In order to prevent cutting of the strop if the carriage be moved in the wrong direction bars 36 may be provided, at the sides of the strop 7, pivotally carried by pivoted levers 37 and pressed by springs 43 and engaged by the blade-holder ; these bars cause lifting of the blade from the strop if the carriage is moved in the wrong direction.
