Abstract
399,540. Sliding-window fastenings and holders. STREET, A. G., 10, Lily Villas, East Road, New Southgate, London. April 5, 1932, No. 9693. [Class 44.] Means for counterbalancing the weight of a vertically sliding-window 1, which may also be held in predetermined positions, comprises a pair of diverging rails 8 depending from the garnish rail 6, and a pair of levers 12 pivoted to the lower edge of the window 1. The free ends of the levers are drawn towards the rails by a spring 3 connected to the levers intermediate their ends, the arrangement being such that as the spring- tension increases with lowering the window, the effective leverage decreases so that the counterbalancing effect of the spring remains practically constant. The ends of the levers may be provided with shoes engaging the rails frictionally, or, as shown, with rollers 13 and the rails may have indented portions 8<1>, 8x so that the window is held opened or closed or at intermediate positions. The rails may be straight or curved, and fixed or mounted so that their inclination may be adjusted. As shown, they are pivoted to a plate 7 on rail 6 and their lower ends are engaged in forks 9. In a modification, Fig. 4, each lever 12 carries a cam 15 to which the spring 3 is secured by a cord 16 attached at 16a.
