Abstract
428,560. Loft-ladders. LOFT LADDERS, Ltd., Broadway Works, Bromley, Kent, and GORHAM, P. H., 5, King William Street, Greenwich, London. Feb. 17, 1934, No. 5312. Addition to 392,940. [Class 20 (ii)] A loft-ladder according to the parent invention is provided with automatically adjustable means between the ladder and the balancing spring for reducing the leverage of the upward pull on the ladder when in its lowered operative position. In the construction shown, the counterbalancing springs are housed in tubes 2 arranged on the sides 4 of the loft opening, and are connected by chains 5 to the trap door 9 carrying the ladder 10. Each chain passes over a fixed pulley 7 adjacent the end of the tube 2, around a pulley 8 on the trap door, and thence to an anchoring device comprising a saddle 11 and a roller 12. The roller is slidably mounted on a track 13 on the tube 2 and slides towards the pivoting axis of the trap door as the latter is lowered. The trap door is locked in its closed position by a spring catch having a ring 14 adapted to receive the hooked end of an operating pole.
