[Class 7 (ii).] In a compound engine the high and low pressure cylinders 1, 3 are coaxial and separated by a partition 2 through which passes the common piston rod 6. The combustion chamber 2a is elongated and the inlet and transfer valves 27, 23 move radially ; these valves are worked off one cam. Crank chambers.-A plate 32 is attached to the piston with a space between the plate and piston, this space is connected by a passage 35 in the piston rod to the crank chamber to act as a ventilator.
