Abstract

Dyeings or printings fast to water are produced on paper or paper pulp by treating the material, either simultaneously or separately, with a water-soluble dyestuff containing one or more sulphonic and/or carboxylic acid groups and a water-soluble salt of a compound which contains on the one hand at least one basic nitrogen atom and on the other hand an aliphatic saturated residue comprising at least 10 carbon atoms, other than a salt of an unsymmetrical mono- or diacylated diamine or a corresponding quaternary ammonium compound. Such substances are diethylcetylamine hydrochloride, dimethyloctodecylamine hydrochloride, octodecytrimethylammonium-methosulphate, diethyloctodecenylamine hydrochloride, pentadecyldihydroimidazole hydrochloride, the mixed ether of cetyl alcohol and N-oxymethylpyridinium chloride, the ester from stearic acid and dimethyl- or diethylaminoethanol, stearylcholine hydrochloride and the corresponding benzyl compounds, the palmitic acid ester of 1-oxyphenyl-3-trimethylammonium chloride, the stearic acid ester of oxyethylpyridinium chloride, diethylaminoethyloctodecyl carbonate hydrochloride, the stearic acid ester of the addition product of glycerinemonochlorhydrin or a : a <1>-glycerinedichlorhydrin with pyridine. Compounds containing capric, lauric and myristic acid residues and those derived from diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine are also specified. In examples (1) paper half-stuff is dyed a vivid green by treating with Benzyl Green B and then with a solution of the stearic acid ester of oxyethylpyridinium chloride, (2) tissue paper is dyed with Direct Safranine B or Kiton Blue A and treated in a bath containing octodecyltrimethyl ammonium methosulphate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of stearylaminoethyldiethylmethyl-ammonium - methosulphate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
